Dorothy “Dot” Huss Leonhardt, age 92 of Huss Avenue, Cherryville, passed peacefully into eternal rest on Sunday, January 23, 2022. A graveside service for Mrs. Leonhardt will be held on Thursday, January 27, at 11:00 a.m. in the Bethphage Lutheran Church Cemetery with the Reverend Fred Mitscke officiating. Anyone wishing to pay their respects may do so on Wednesday, January 26 at Carpenter’s Funeral Home during their regular business hours.
“Dot” was born in Lincoln County on December 30, 1929, in the home of her late parents, Henry Monroe Huss and Bessie Leonard Huss. In addition to her parents, Dot was preceded in death by her loving husband, Warren Ted Leonhardt, and by her siblings, Robert “Bob” Huss and Helen Huss Mullis.
Dot worked for over 40 years for Carlton/SCT Mills of Cherryville as a winder. Following her retirement, she worked part time for a number of years at Keystone Carbon of Cherryville, from 3:00 a.m. until 7:00 a.m.! Dot was a lifelong, active member of Bethphage Lutheran Church of Lincolnton where she served in many capacities through the years, including Sunday School teacher, Luther League Advisor, and as a member of the women’s organization of the Church. During her retirement she volunteered for Hospice of Cleveland County and enjoyed being a member of the Cherryville Senior Citizens’ Club, serving as a faithful secretary for many years. She also loved traveling and spending time with her friends and family, by whom she will be deeply missed.
Dot is survived by two daughters, Nancy Leonhardt Tallent (Gene, deceased), Becky Leonhardt Engle (Ronnie), and one son, Steve Leonhardt (Vivette); two grandchildren , Teddi Neal (Charles), and Ronald Leonhardt (Michelle); five great-grandchildren, Seth, Ryan, and Jessie Neal, Bessie Leonhardt White (Preston), and Chase Leonhardt; along with numerous other relatives and friends.
The family wishes to thank Dot’s church family and friends for all the love and support they have shown her over the years. Also, the family is grateful to Hospice of Cleveland County, Gaston County Meals on Wheels Program, and special caregivers Nancy Rudisill and Doretha McClain, all of whom provided the means for Dot to be lovingly cared for in her home until she passed.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bethphage Lutheran Church 4060 N.C. Hwy. 182 Lincolnton, or Hospice of Cleveland County, 951 Wendover Heights Drive of Shelby, N.C. 28150.
