Heman Baine Devine, age 98, passed away Thursday, January 26, 2017 at Robin Johnson Hospice House. He was born May 5, 1918 in Gaston County to the late Oscar and Emma Sisk Devine. He served in the U.S Army in WWII with the 1289th combat engineers in England, France and Germany. He returned home in 1946 where he was employed with Carolina Freight Carriers. He retired after 38 years as a long line driver. Heman was an active member of First Presbyterian Church and the men's class for many years. He served as long time vice-president of the local teamsters union.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Pauline H. Devine; brothers, Andy, Clyde, Garland and Paul Devine; and sister, Hazel Forshee.
He is survived by his son, Bennett Devine and wife, Kathy of Myrtle Beach; grandchildren, Eric Devine (Mara), Julie Denton (Danny) and Scott Devine (Sandi); five great-grandchildren; one great great grandchild; a very special nephew, Dennis Devine and numerous other nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, January 31, 2017 at 3:00 PM at Carpenter-Porter Funeral & Cremation Services with Rev. Dr. Bill Lowe officiating. Burial will follow at City Memorial Cemetery with military honors conducted by Cherryville American Legion Post #100 Honor Guard. Family will receive friends Tuesday from 2:00 to 2:45 PM prior to the service at the funeral home.
