Jack Stephenson

John “Jack” Stephenson, age 95, of Jane Street, passed away Wednesday, July 7, 2021 at Testa Family Hospice House. He was born in Seattle, WA August 2, 1925. His parents were Charles and Nellie Stephenson. He was preceded in death by a brother, Dick Stephenson, a sister, Pat Elder, a son, John W. Stephenson, Jr.

He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Mary Etta Stephenson; a daughter, Janice Myers of Poison, MT; two sons, Gary Stephenson of Huntington, CA, and Rick Stephenson of Polson, MT; two stepdaughters, Lauren Nearing (Guy) of Shorewood, IL, and Robin Jones (Bill) of Scammon, KS; two stepsons, David Crane (Renee) and Stephen Crane (Kim) of Cherryville. He had 9 grandchildren: 17 great-grandchildren.

He served in the United States Coast Guard during WWII, 1943 – 1946, in the Pacific. Jack’s professional career was in the trucking industry, and his work led him ultimately to live in the Cherryville, NC area where he worked for Carolina Freight Carriers. He retired from CFCC as Vice-President of Human Resources.

Jack was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church of Cherryville, serving on various committees and teaching a men’s Bible class.

Jack was an avid golfer. In his later years he was a member of the Cleveland County Men’s Golf Association and served as secretary. His most memorable round of golf was played with Arnold Palmer after winning the opportunity in a lottery.

Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, July 12, 2021 at First United Methodist Church of Cherryville. Visitation will occur from 9:45 to 10:45 prior to the service. A private graveside committal will precede the hour of visitation.
