John Darren Wing age 39 of Stanley, passed away at his residence, Wednesday, April 3, 2024. He was born June 5, 1984 in Mecklenburg County to Teresa Ellis-Shaw and the late John Darien Bowen.  John was preceded in death by his grandparents Frank and Patricia Bowen and step-grandmother Berniece Ann Shaw.

Survivors include his sons, Joseph Darien Wing, Elijah Dean Wing; parents, Teresa Ellis-Shaw, and stepfather Calvin L. Shaw; siblings, Krystal Dawn Nguyen, Victoria Ann Shaw, and Kristen Streimer; grandparents, Rev. E. Lee Ellis and Evelyn B. Ellis; step-grandfather Danny Shaw; nieces and nephews, Noah Nguyen, Aiden Nguyen, Nikolas Rodriguez, and Emma Grace Rodriguez; aunts and uncles, Nina Ellis Vassei (Mohammad), Faith Ellis McDaniel (Matt), Sharon Houston (Dan), Randy Bowen (Jeannie), Brian Bowen (Cindy) and numerous cousins.

John proudly served in the United States Marine Corps as a Helicopter Mechanic with HMLA 167, “Have Guns Will Travel”. During Operation Iraqi Freedom, John completed 3 deployments to Iraq with his squadron. He was Awarded the Marine Corps Good Conduct medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon (3 Awards), Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal (Al Asad), National Defense Service Medal, Certificate of Commendation (Individual Award, 2 Awards). His Marine Corps family lovingly called him “Wingman,” which became his nickname to close friends and family.  He was a loving father and enjoyed playing with his sons Joseph and Elijah.

Other hobbies included cooking, scuba diving, gaming, drawing, computer building-repairing, shooting, tinkering with tools, working on mechanical equipment, and spending time with his family.  He prided himself on being an aircraft mechanic. 

A celebration of life will be held at Carpenter-Porter Funeral & Cremation Service on April 14, 2024, at 4:00 PM. The family will receive friends from 2:30 to 3:45 PM prior to the service.

Burial will be at Salisbury Veteran Cemetery on April 16, 2024 at 2:00pm.

In lieu of flowers the family would like memorials to be made to John’s sons Joseph and Elijah Wing in care of Teresa and Calvin Shaw.
