Mary Faires

Mary Sue Carlyon Faires, age 85 of Crescent Dr. passed away Friday, July 7, 2017 at Wendover Hospice House in Shelby. She was born February 26, 1932 in Lansing, Michigan to the late William Ralph and Thelma Mary Sheen Carlyon. Mrs. Faires was a member of First United Methodist Church where she formerly served as president of UMW, Historian, and Circle Chairperson. She was also a former Girl Scout Leader. Mrs. Faires attended East Lansing High School and MacMurray College. Jacksonville, Illinois. She received her BA from Michigan State University. She continued her education with a certification in LD-EMH from Appalachian State University. Mrs. Faires retired from Gaston County Schools with Cherryville East and formerly taught in San Diego, Mt. Holly, and Mooresville. Mary Sue was a member of the National Educational Association, the North Carolina Education Association, the Cherryville East Parent-Teacher Organization, and a life member of Michigan State Alumni Association. She was awarded Teacher of the Year and served as a past chairperson of the School Base Placement Committee at Cherryville East. Mrs. Faires also enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren, traveling, reading and entertaining friends. She was a member of the Village Garden Club, three bridge clubs and hosted numerous dinner parties. She always wore a smile and had kind words for others.

Mrs. Faires is survived by her husband of 62 years, Robert W. Faires, Jr. who was former Tax Manager for Carolina Freight Carriers in Cherryville, NC; daughter, Melinda Faires of Okinawa, Japan, a graduate of Coastal Carolina University and current Housing Flight Chief of Kadena Air Base; son, Robert W. Faires, III, and wife, Kathy Hill Faires of Seneca, SC. He was a graduate of NC State University and current Director of Utilities for Seneca, SC; daughter, Katherine Faires of Fort Mill, SC, a graduate of Western Carolina University and current Global Treasury Product Manager for Wells Fargo; grandchildren, Capt. William Faires US Marine Corps and wife, Savannah of Jacksonville, NC, Kate Bowers and husband, Brian of Easley, SC, Samantha Faires of Seneca, SC, Margaret Huggins of Greenville, SC, and Connor Huggins of Fort Mill, SC; great grandchildren, Lydia and Emma Faires of Jacksonville, NC; brother, William Carlyon of Atlanta, GA; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 29, 2017 at 2:00 PM at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Joe Collins, D. Min. officiating. A receiving of friends and reception will immediately follow the service in the fellowship hall.

A private burial will be held at Hillcrest Gardens in Mt. Holly.
