Elizabeth Auten

Catherine Elizabeth “Lib” Auten, age 100, formerly of Cherryville, passed away Friday, September 30, 2022 at Clapp’s Nursing Center of Pleasant Garden, NC. She was born December 26, 1921 in Lincoln County, daughter to the late Puett Clay and Ruth Abernathy Lawing.

Mrs. Auten was formerly employed with Belk’s Department Store of Cherryville. She won the Silver award and won the Pacesetter award multiple times. She was a devout member of First Baptist Church of Cherryville. She was a wonderful cook and loved cooking classic southern dishes in her kitchen. She was well known for her delicious strawberry pies.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Mack Auten; daughter, Libby Ann Sandbank; brothers, Puett Lawing, Jr., and Paul Lawing.

Survivors include her children, James Richard Auten of Las Vegas, NV, and Kathy Jean Auten of Greensboro, NC.; sister, Nelda Ann Wilkinson (Yates) of King, NC.; grandchildren, Christopher Sandbank (Rosey), Sophia Elizabeth Sandbank, Elizabeth Leigh Minto (Ryan), and Adam Huffine (Natalie); great-grandchildren John Wesley Minto, Charles Minto, Catherine Minto and Charlotte Minto; sister-in-law, Joann Lawing; and numerous nieces.

A Graveside Service will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday, October 5, 2022 at Cherryville City Memorial Cemetery with Rev. Dr. Vince Hefner officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Cherryville or the staff at Clapp’s Nursing Center of Pleasant Garden, NC at 5229, Appomattox Rd, Pleasant Garden, NC 27313.
